When Steve and the kids brought home the hen and her chicks it reminded me of Easter time in Delta.
Sid had an Uncle that owned the hardware and grocery store, Quality Market. When Sid was a young boy his Uncle and Aunt would buy hundreds of chicks at Easter time. They were still doing this when we moved to Delta and started having our family.
Are't they cute.
Then they would use food coloring that was in a pot of water and dunk each chick to color it. I think that would be a lot of work, but they must have enjoyed doing this, because Sid remembers getting a colored chick when he was young every Easter.
Our kids usually picked the color of chick they wanted and we would take it home. Because we lived on a farm our chicks usually lived. Can you imagine 4 colored chicks in the house running around.
Then of course someone decided it was cruel to color the chicks and then let children have them to take home because probably 90 % died.
I know our kids loved to carry them around. They were so soft and cute. The cat and dog seemed to like them also. So the practice stopped
But it was always fun to go Quality Market on Easter Week-End. There was free cotton candy, free soda pop, hot dogs for 10 cents (we always brought a dozen or more), ice cream cones for 10 cents, numbers on the floor of the grocery store so you could win prizes and bags of groceries at certain times. The store was always filled with people Thursday, Friday and Saturday even brimming on the outside with lines for the free soda pop and cotton candy. It was a annual event we looked forward to every year. They still do this in Delta.

My sweetie loves blogging. She does it WONDERFULLY! AND I LOVE HER!
It sounds so fun! What wonderful memories for you and your family. I love hearing about people's traditions--thanks for sharing!!
Easter is fun in Delta! I believe they still give away the cotton candy and sell those 10 cent hot dogs and give away bags of groceries when you are found standing on the numbers in the aisles! So much fun!
I don't remember the chicks, but it doesn't seem very healthy to dip them in the dye!!! It would be mighty festive looking though!
