This is the site of the first English Catholic chapel in the New World. Archaeology indicates that at least three chapels stood at different times. The last of these was built of brick in about 1667. It was torn down in the early 18th century. Surrounding the chapel site are the unmarked graves of hundreds of the earlist Maryland colonists, and evidence of a dwelling for Jesuit priests.
