Saving or Losing Face

Does any one know where the saying Saving face or Losing face comes from????

Love to hear your ideas or the real answer if you know.

I would say it has something to do with being able to "show" your face in society....back in the day when people cared about their actions.....and we just say it and of course there are still people who care about saving face :) It just started a long time ago,and has carried through to now.

The noble ladies and gentlemen of the late 1700s wore much makeup to impress each other. Since they rarely bathed, the makeup would get thicker and thicker. If they sat too close to the heat of the fireplace, the makeup would start to melt. If that happened, a servant would move the screen in front of the fireplace to block the heat, so they wouldn't "lose face."

looks like you went to the oldenglishsayings.com Stephanie. You are right. We learned that at Sotterley Plantation while we were there Saturday. They even had the screens that they used. One of the reasons they used beeswax was to fill in the pox marks from chicken pox and they covered the wax with makeup.
